We're a bit different! We're about delivering excellent service to our clients whilst enjoying our working lives, and still having time to maximise our potential outside of work.

Up to 2nd April 2007 Shakespeares Solicitors and Putsmans LLP were two of Birmingham’s oldest and most highly regarded law firms. Putsmans can trace its roots back to 1843 and took its present name from Maurice Putsman in 1951. Shakespeares was originally formed in 1856 and in 1861 a Mr Shakespeare (William – but not that one!) joined the original founder Mr Plunkett and the firm became known as Plunkett & Shakespeare.

Our combined firm, with nearly 300 people based in the heart of the city, is now one of Birmingham’s largest providers of legal advice. We remain committed to our Midlands roots, and while striving to build a modern law firm, work to ensure our people are given every opportunity to realise their potential.

And our future...well we continue to learn every day about what our clients want as they strive to build successful futures. That means we will have to respond quickly and remain flexible in our approach. So no big marketing promises – just a commitment to meet our clients’ needs in the best way we can.

Our approach

We're not going to put profit before people.
This means that we will never make a decision based purely on money if it means that we have to break any of the promises we have made to our people.

We're going to openly and transparently reward achievement.
Everyone in our firm will know exactly how their performance is measured. And those measures run across a range of results; not just the amount of fees billed but how you deal with others internally and the social contribution you make to the firm. Performance and measurement systems will be open to all and we'll go out of our way to publicly celebrate outstanding success both in terms of recognition and reward.

We're going to work hard but thoroughly enjoy doing it.
Yes, we expect commitment but we also want our people to have a real life outside of work. Performance and reward will never be based on hours spent at the office. In fact we believe that having the right mix of people with diverse interests away from work brings a unique flavour to our service that's valued by clients - not to mention stopping us becoming boring!
